Samantha (Sami) Gene Brady DiMera (formerly Horton, Reed, Walker and Hernandez) is an anti-heroine of Days of Our Lives. Sami Brady is fictional character from the NBC soap opera Days of our Lives, portrayed by Alison Sweeney. The character was born on-screen during the episode dated October 16, 1984, and her birth date was laterSORASed to October 16, 1975. Introduced by then head writer Margaret DePriest, Sami has been portrayed by Sweeney since January 1993. Sami is known for her failed relationships, children and her manipulative trouble-making ways. She has been described as vindictive and the girl "you love to hate". She is also the grandmother to Arianna Grace Horton, Will and Gabi's daughter.
Characterization
Since Sweeney has stepped into the role, Sami has been showcased as the series' primary troublemaker and "the girl you loved to hate" through her lying and scheming. In recent years, Sweeney has established herself as a leading heroine, with the show centering on the popular and controversial relationships between Sami and her love interests Austin Reed(Patrick Muldoon), Brandon Walker(Matt Cenedo), Lucas Horton (Bryan Dattilo), EJ DiMera (James Scott), and Rafe Hernandez (Galen Gering). The character has been described as "vindictive"; a writer from the American newspaper Asbury Park Press wrote that: "she's so bad, she's good".[8] According to Austin American-Statesman in 1996, Sweeney had talked about "longing to play a conniving troublemaker" and she got her wish and more. Sweeney stated: "It's kind of funny that I said that [sic] I had no idea that (the writers) would take me literally". Sweeney has said to have given a new word to "manipulative" during her portrayal of Sami.[9] In 2005, Sami manipulatively created a male alter ego, Stan. During this period of time, from February to August, Dan Wells took over the role. Sami is known for her rivalry with Nicole Walker (Arianne Zucker)[10] and Sweeney has said that Sami has never had "female friends".
Relationships

Sami is known for her relationships, and many "failed trips to the altar".[12] Janet Di Lauro of About.com said "No matter, Sami's always been a character who's fun to watch and root for as she's searched for her soul mate, time and time again."[13] As a teenager, she developed a crush on Austin Reed (Austin Peck), but was "devastated" when he continued his romance with her sister Carrie Brady (Christie Clark). She worked with Austin's brother Lucas to break up the couple. She ended up having a one night stand with Lucas. Di Lauro said Sami's most "diabolical plot" was drugging Austin to have sex with her, which was "the start of an elaborate scheme" where she ended up pregnant and named Austin as the father, although Lucas was the actual father.[14][16] The truth was eventually revealed and Austin, after nearly marrying Sami without loving her, reunited with Carrie.[14]
A bitter custody battle ensued between Lucas and Sami, who had a "love/hate" relationship over the years. Of the pairing, Sweeney said "their past is such a deep relationship and ultimately a friendship and a trust that they have with each other."[17] They ended up marrying,[18] but it was "permanently ended" when EJ entered the picture.[14] EJ, the son of longtime Crime-lord Stefano DiMera (Joseph Mascolo), developed an obsession with Sami, and ended up controversially "raping" her.[19][20] Sami became pregnant and gave birth to twins; her daughter's father is Lucas, and son's paternity belonged to EJ.[14] EJ had asked Sami for sex to save Lucas' life, while he was trapped and nearly died.[14] This led to a sham wedding between EJ and Sami, in exchange for the DiMeras ending the fifty-year family feud between the Brady family. Although she initially hated him, the couple ended up in a "night of passion" resulting in another pregnancy.[14] Of whether EJ or Lucas was Sami's "true love", Sweeney said "I personally think Sami and Lucas truly love each other, but obviously a lot has gone on between them that has pushed them apart. Right now, they are writing Sami more focusing on EJ."[11] She also said that she enjoyed working with Scott, and called him "enchanting."[11] Of working with Dattilo, Sweeney said "I am definitely a long-standing Lumi fan and I miss working with Bryan every day. He is so fun! I was in a scene the other day and looking around, like he and I have such a history together, for some inside joke and he wasn’t on the set. It’s just strange when I don’t get to work with him all the time."[17]

TV Guide's Nelson Branco named Lucas and Sami one of soap's greatest supercouples, and said "For years all this couple could think of was breaking up Austin and Carrie, until one magical day, partners-in-crime and cohorts Sami and Lucas realized they were in love with each other! Now as Days’ reigning super couple, they face the evil wrath of EJ and his family, The DiMeras. Will Sami marry EJ, the man who raped her to end this family feud forever — and will Lucas be able to forgive her?"[21] Despite this, the couple divorced and despite minor reunions since, haven't been a couple.[14] James Scott said "They’re not really re-visiting it. They have never done it. I think it’s about time, frankly. There is a good opportunity for story there. Alison Sweeney (Sami) and I work very well together. It’s sort of a fairy tale. They don’t play it so much now, but the Bradys and the DiMeras have a history."[22] Scott also noted that EJ and Sami "love eachother" but not necessarily in a romantic way.[22] On-Air On-Soaps said "legions of fans are waiting for their beloved EJami duo to finally start a full-blown romance ... something that has been teased, and teased, and teased for years."[23] He romances with Lucas and EJ have been popular with viewers, who call the pairings 'Lumi' and 'Ejami'.[22] Upon Lucas returning to Salem in 2012, a poll ran by Soap Opera Digest revealed that majority of fans wanted Lucas and Sami back together.[24] While in the Witness Protection Program while pregnant with her second child with EJ, Sami fell in love with her body guard Rafe.[14] When asked who out of Lucas, EJ or Rafe should be with Sami, Sweeney said "You can't ask that" because "that is one topic I am now scared to talk about because you say one thing and the fans get all kinds of crazy on you."[10] She said that it's so interesting to see how Sam has "grown and changed" and feels that the "relationship with Rafe is definitely a different one from the way she’s been in the past".[10] Fans refer to Sami and Rafe as 'Safe'.[25] Sweeney said that it's been fun getting "to know Galen" and said "We have fun working together, and it’s nice. It’s a new, different storyline for Sami."[17]

Sami is mother to four children: Will Horton(Chandler Massey),Johnny DiMera(Aaron and Griffin Kunitz), Allie Horton (Carolyn and Campbell Rose) and [[Sydney DiMera] (Isabelle and Sahara Roberts). Janet Di Lauro of About.com said "While Sami wouldn’t exactly be called lucky at love, let’s face it, most of her couplings have been wildly dysfunctional, her romances have produced four beautiful children: Will, Allie, Johnny and Sydney."[14] By 2009, Will was 16 years old; Sweeney said "It’s sort of overwhelming to me sometimes to realize my character has a sixteen-year-old" considering she started working on Days of our Lives at 16, but she enjoys the dynamics between Will and Sami.[17] In 2012, Sami and Lucas' son Will came out as gay.[26] While Lucas was accepting, Sami was initially "responsible for the other point of view" according to Dattilo. Sweeney said viewers can expect Sami to "have a traditional Sami reaction" because it's "such a vulnerable moment".[26] Sweeney explained that Sami thinks it's because of her, and "She has to sort through all of those feelings and talk to lots of people in Salem about it." She added "Sami loves her son so much, but she just always seems to say the wrong thing. She always puts her foot in her mouth."[26]
Storylines
Samantha Gene "Sami" Brady is born on October 16, 1977 with her twin brother Eric Brady (Jensen Ackles). They are the only children born to Marlena Evans (Deidre Hall) and Roman Brady(Josh Taylor). Sami is named after her deceased aunt, Samantha Evens. A feud between the Brady family and the powerful DiMera family puts the infants in danger. Roman sends them to live in Colorado after their mother's disappearance.
1992-1995
In 1992, Sami reappears in Salem as a teenager. She develops a crush on her sister's boyfriend, Austin Reed. She is traumatized after seeing her mother having sex with John Black (Drake Hogestyn) which leads to an affair that results in the birth of Sami's sister, Belle. At the time, Marlena was "married" to Roman. Sami's mental health spirals downward, and she becomes a bulimic in an attempt to lose weight. Sami later tells Marlena that she witnessed her having sex with John. Knowing that she is John's child, Sami, who volunteers at the Salem Hospital, switches Belle's blood test. She then kidnaps Belle and places her on the black market. John rescues Belle on Christmas eve. On Belle's christening, Stefano DiMera shows Roman Sami's diary which reveals the affair and Belle's paternity. Roman leaves Marlena, devastating Sami.
Sami befriends Lucas Horton and dates his friend Alan Harris (Paul Kersey), whom her family strongly opposes to. Sami's best friend Jamie overhears Alan talk about being in love with Carrie, but keeps this from Sami. Frustrated by his unrequited love for Carrie, Alan rapes Sami. Sami confides in Lucas, but without corroborating proof, the press vilifies Sami as a liar once the news gets out. Alan tries to rape her again and she stops him by shooting him in the groin. Distraught, Lucas manages to comfort Sami and they have sex. She still, however, has a crush on Austin and drugs him into bed so he would believe she was Carrie. After her divorce from Roman, Marlena became vulnerable and was possessed by the devil. While possessed, Marlena told Sami to seduce Austin. She tried, but Austin rejected her. Sami left town in February 1995.
1995-1997
Sami returned in July 1995 and crashed Austin's wedding to Carrie where she revealed that she was carrying his child. After a rough teen pregnancy, Sami gave birth to William Robert Reed on November 16, 1995. Sami hides the fact that Will is actually Lucas' son, and passes him off as Austin's. Austin briefly marries Sami in the Fall of 1996 however it is quickly annulled. Austin and Sami are engaged and plan to wed again in the September 1997. However, he left her at the altar after Carrie uncovers the truth about Will's paternity. Sami renames her son William Reed Roberts and leaves town for Rome.
1997-2014
In December 1997, She returns and befriends Franco Kelly who spots her in Rome.(Victor Alfieri). He encourages her and Will to return home and eventually they fall in love and are engaged; Franco uses her to get a greencard and stay in the country. He is murdered on their wedding day in 1998. Sami sees the body and faints near it. Lucas' mother Kate Roberts(Lauren Koslow) frames Sami for the murder so that she would go to jail and Lucas could have full custody of Will. Sami is convinced and sentenced to death by lethal injection for the murder in May 1999. Minutes before she is about to be executed, the Salem PD uncover evidence that Lucas killed Franco and Kate framed her. Sami is freed and finds out from Ali that Carrie and Mike are having an affair. She teams with Craig and Nancy and immeditely exposes their affair to Austin and Austin leaves Carrie and returns to Sami. In November 1999, Carrie and Mike become engaged, her divorce with Austin is finalized, and they leave Salem. Austin and Sami remained together until 2002 when Austin again finds out about Sami's scheming and lying, and leaves her at the Alter and leaves Salem. That same year, Sami falls in love with Brandon Walker (Matt Cedeno), who helps her regain full custody of Will from Lucas and Kate. Sami forgives Brandon when he had affair with Dr. Lexie Carver. However, worried that Brandon could have fathered Lexi's child and not Abe, Sami changes the results. However, Lexie sets her up, when in reality Abe is the father of Theo. Brandon and Sami are married briefly in 2003. However, her lies and schemes are exposed by Lexie and Tony and Brandon ends the marriage. Sami has an accident at the DiMera mansion and falls through the window. Lucas helps her recover and they fall in love. By December 2004, They become engaged, much to Kate's chagrin. Kate drugs Sami and places her in Brandon's bed the night before her marriage to Lucas in a bid to end the engagement. Lucas leaves Sami.
Sami's sorely compromised psychological state deteriorates to such a degree that Sami begins to work for Tony DiMera(Thaao Penghlis), becomes a transvestite under an assumed name, "Stan", and sells illicit drugs to a pain-wracked John Black, all out of a base-born, suppositious need for revenge. Attempting to redeem herself, Sami convinces Lucas that Kate had set her up; that she was never unfaithful. The two reunite and agree to marry once again.
Lucas believes that Sami has changed for the better, but Kate reveals Sami's misdeeds as "Stan", and Lucas calls off the wedding. Austin Reed returns to Salem and befriends Sami. Carrie Brady also returns after ending her relationship with Mike Horton. Lucas and Austin, now business rivals, attempt to buy out Carrie's company. Lucas backs out, finding out that Carrie runs the entire company, and that once again, Sami manipulated him. Austin and Carrie fall back in love and plan their future together however this changes when Carrie learns that Austin's company has taken over Highstyle. Carrie dates Lucas on the rebound. Austin does the same with Sami, and both couples become engaged.
Sami's relationship to Austin is tested however, when E.J. Wells, an English race car driver, moves into the apartment next to theirs. When Sami and Austin's wedding ends in disaster, EJ and Sami kiss for the first time. Carrie ends her relationship with Lucas and remarries Austin. They leave to start a life together in Switzerland.
Sami turns to EJ, and the two begin dating. Sami then discovers that not only is EJ the son of Stefano DiMera, but that he is also sleeping with Kate. Sami and Lucas rekindle their love in spite of Kate, and the two decide to take a road trip. Their car breaks down in a snow storm, and they seek shelter in an abandoned cabin where they make love. Weighed down by snow, the crumbling ceiling caves in. Lucas is trapped, Sami runs to get help, meets up with EJ in a snow drift, and asks him to help her. Revealing himself as a true DiMera, EJ agrees to help Sami only if she has sex with him. In subsequent weeks, EJ continues to taunt Sami with reminders of the deal they made that night. Sami tells Lucas about her pregnancy and they get married; the night of their wedding, he learns about EJ raping her. Her pregnancy was full of speculation about who the father of her unborn twins were. She later gives birth to: John "Johnny" Roman Roberts (later legally changed to John Roman DiMera) and Alice "Allie" Caroline Horton. It was revealed after a paternity test that EJ was Johnny's father and Allie was Lucas' daughter. Sami makes the painful decision to end her marriage to Lucas and marry EJ to end the Brady-DiMera feud. At her wedding to EJ, Lucas, Marlena and Kate attempt to shoot EJ Lucas is arrested and sent to prison, and Will leaves for Switzerland. It was revealed that Will was the actual shooter and Lucas went to prison to protect his son.
EJ tries to take custody of Johnny, but as the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) wanted to deport him, Sami moved into the DiMera mansion with her child and they had to prove that they were happily married couple. They later had sex, and Lucas, released on house arrest, saw them. Sami ends her marriage to E.J but Lucas doesn't forgive her. EJ moves on to Nicole, and Sami finds out she is pregnant again. She doesn't tell EJ, and after witnessing a murder, goes into the Witness Protection Program. There, she meets her guard, Rafe Hernandez and later gives birth to a daughter. Nicole had miscarried a child but pretended to still be pregnant. She decided to adopt a child and swap it with Sami's child, wanting EJ's biological child. Nicole's switch works and she begins raising Sami's child Sydney DiMera as her own, while Sami raises a baby girl named Grace with Rafe. Grace dies and EJ finds out that it was "his" child. Eventually, the baby switch is revealed and Sami is reunited with Sydney. However, for revenge, EJ kidnaps his own daughter and makes everyone think she is dead. However, he falls back in love with Sami and returns Sydney to her, pretending to be the hero. The couple reconnect and after her relationship with Rafe had ended, she engaged EJ However, at the wedding, Rafe presented evidence to Sami about Sydney's real kidnapper. She left him for Rafe, and discovers that he had a plan to kidnap his children and take them away forever. To stop him, she shoots him in the head. Rafe proposes to her while EJ narrowly escaped death. He later won full custody of the children and Sami married Rafe. Johnny was diagnosed with eye cancer and she regains joint custody. After allowing Johnny and Sydney back into their mother's life, Stefano and E.J. switch Rafe with an impostor whose face they surgically alter to pose as Rafe's double.
The DiMeras' schemes were eventually revealed and after months Rafe was reunited with Sami. But Rafe and Sami began to fall apart when he suspects that she is still in love with Austin, as they have started to bond over their mutual distrust of John. Rafe and Carrie become John's defense lawyers over an embezzlement claim, and they begin to fall in love. One day, Johnny goes missing in the Pub when a man, angered at the loss of his money form the embezzlement, shoots into the Pub. Sami heads to the mansion and argues with EJ, then they see a news report about a dead boy found on the pier. Believing it is Johnny, they have sex in their grief, which is witnessed by Will and Stefano. Realizing they made a mistake, they decide to keep it a secret. But the secret causes a strain in Sami's relationship with Rafe, and one day, Sami catches Rafe and Carrie kissing. Angered, she kicks Rafe out of the loft. But later, Rafe overhears Will telling Sonny that EJ slept with Sami the day Johnny went missing, and he reveals the truth at the DiMera mansion to Nicole, who divorces EJ. Rafe also divorces Sami, who is left devastated and begs Rafe to come back to her. Later, when Carrie believes Austin cheated on her with Abigail, she becomes involved with Rafe, causing Sami to be jealous. When Sami and EJ are led to believe that Rafe and Nicole had revenge sex, Sami reveals it to Carrie, causing problems for them. Sami calls Lucas one day, and he surprises her by returning to Salem, though he reveals he is engaged to a woman called Autumn, making Sami jealous.Eventually, Autumn dumps Lucas because she is tired of waiting for him, and Sami and Lucas make love, getting back together after realizing that they have always loved each other. But Sami also continues to be drawn towards EJ, which frustrates Lucas. One day, she leaves with EJ to clear his name from being a suspect in Stefano's murder (it just turns out that an imposter of Stefano was killed by Ian McCallister). Once they arrive at a safehouse, her and EJ start making out and Sami admits she has feelings for EJ, although she also loves Lucas. EJ leaves after getting a call, and Rafe comes into the safehouse, arresting Sami. When Rafe is attacked by one of EJ's bodyguards, Sami injures the bodyguard by shooting him, saving Rafe. Sami learns from Rafe that Carrie left town with Austin, as he never cheated on her with Abigail, and Carrie had gotten pregnant. Rafe and Sami express regret that their relationship never worked out. EJ returns and feels uncomfortable with the situation, but their names are cleared when they return to Salem. When Sami goes to speak with Lucas, he dumps her, tired of Sami playing games with all the men she is involved with.
Despite being saddened over her ruined relationship with Lucas, Sami decides to focus primarily on EJ. But she also realizes she still loves Rafe. Sami goes on a date with Rafe after they share a kiss, and admits that she loves him much more than anything she feels for EJ. They kiss later, but EJ blackmails Rafe with information about Gabi, causing Rafe to leave Sami alone. Sami eventually gets the truth out from Chad, and chooses Rafe over EJ. But EJ learns that Rafe lied to Sami about being the father of Nicole's dead baby, and tells Sami, who ends up leaving Rafe and getting close to EJ again. When Sami forgives Rafe, he is annoyed, as she is indecisive, and Sami spends New Years with EJ. But Rafe kisses her at the stroke of midnight. EJ later returns and kisses Sami, also getting her a romantic tableside dinner. Yet despite this, she only continues to daydream of Rafe kissing her at midnight. Sami eventually decides to marry Rafe after Gabi & Nick's wedding, but has a hard time telling EJ, who claims to have fallen for Sami again. However, Chad reveals that Nick and Gabi lied about her baby being Nick's, and it comes out that Will is the father. Sami believes Gabi wanted to deny Will his child and says many rude things to her, angering Rafe. Sami gets mad that Rafe is defending Gabi, and the two get into an argument that ends with Rafe telling Sami to leave, breaking up with her.
Realizing she doesn't want to be single, Sami starts briefly dating Dr. Daniel Jonas. Daniel and Sami never quite pick up off the ground and they eventually break up and she eventually goes back to EJ, and they have sex. Rafe, upset, sleeps with Kate. EJ also manages to kick Stefano out of the mansion once he steals DiMera Enterprises from him. Afterwards, EJ proposes to Sami, and she accepts. Later, Rafe is beaten and Stefano, having learned of Kate and Rafe's affair orders his crooked cop, Joe Bernardi (Rafe's friend and co-worker) to cut off Rafe's penis. Sami gets into a fight with Kate about her relationship with Rafe, hinting that Sami really loves Rafe. However, later Sami sees Bernardi about to maim Rafe, and she shoots and kills the cop. Sami is arrested when the police don't believe her story, as the knife Bernardi had when Sami shot him is nowhere to be found. Eventually, EJ learns that Stefano has the evidence. Stefano blackmails EJ into letting him back into the house and giving back his company for Sami to be freed, which EJ does. When Sami returns, she is glad but gets angry that EJ gave up everything and Stefano has returned. She forgives him and they have a lot of sex. Sami then turns her attention to Nick Fallon. Her and EJ failed to help Will out of the situation last time, and now Nick is trying to take Will's baby from him again. Sami and Kate find Gabi by the river, having 'killed' Nick when he tried to rape her. Sami and Kate try to dump Nick's body in the river, but he wakes up and attacks Sami. She eventually throws him in the water. The trio eventually come clean to Will, Sonny and EJ about what they did, and are determined to keep it a secret from everyone, especially Rafe. At the same time, Sami learns that Kristen was behind her brother, Eric's, rape. When she learns that EJ knew and didn't tell her, she kicks him out of their bedroom. Sami, however, decides to keep it a secret from Eric, but he eventually figures out the truth. Sami (now with dyed brown hair) later forgives EJ, and they begin planning for a May wedding, but Nick shows up at baby Arianna's christening, shocking everyone. Nick blackmails everyone who was involved in the river incident. Frustrated, Sami and EJ decide to hire a hitman to kill Nick when he tries to take the baby from Will again. But Sami later regrets her decision after she learns Allie loves Nick. Later, Sami and EJ head to the Square to have an alibi when Nick is shot, but then he stumbles into the Square with 3 bullet holes. Sami is shocked and becomes paranoid after running into the hitman, who wants to meet with EJ. However, EJ later learns his hitman didn't kill Nick when he gets a refund. The two get anxious when Will confesses to killing Nick after Lucas is a suspect, and Sami and EJ beg Will not to confess, as they know he didn't do it. Eventually, Gabi admits she killed Nick, and EJ represents her. Sami also learns that Eric breaks up with Nicole, and is overjoyed. Then, Sami learns Kate is going to marry Stefano and doesn't want Sami and EJ married in the mansion together. Sami wants to move up the wedding date and asks Abigail to be her maid-of-honor and wedding planner. The two had been bonding in the recent months as Abby taught Sami art so she had stuff in common with EJ for when they went to Italy for their honeymoon. Little did Sami know that Abigail had an affair with EJ when Sami kicked him out of her bedroom. Sami also clashes with Marlena when Gabi tells Marlena the truth about what happened at the river with Nick.
However, it turns out Sami knew about the affair for awhile, and was plotting revenge against EJ and Abby. She hired Abby as her wedding planner and subtly played mind games with her. Sami went through with her wedding to EJ, but had him arrested on their wedding day on tax evasion charges. Sami coaxed EJ into thinking Stefano was behind it and he signed over power of attorneys at DiMera Enterprises. Sami was also working with Kate, who Stefano made his proxy, so they forged a letter from Stefano and blackmailed the board members into making them CO-CEOs of DiMera Enterprises. Sami then revealed to EJ she knew about the affair and taunted him about his predicament. Sami went over to Jennifer's house and showed her and Abby a slideshow of photos from the wedding. She twisted the knife further by telling Abby that Jack would be proud of who she became and then showed Abby and Jennifer the photo of Abby and EJ kissing. Sami berated Abby and called her names, but Jennifer defended her emotionally distraught daughter and threw Sami out of the house, so Sami told Abby's new boyfriend Ben Rogers about Abby and EJ's affair. Sami then came home to the DiMera Mansion, which she was now sharing with Kate. Rafe paid the two woman a visit and Sami overheard Kate and Rafe talk about how they recently slept together.
